Border timespaces: understanding the regulation of international mobility and migration

This article is published as part of the Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography special issue based on Vega symposium: 'Bounded spaces in question: X-raying persistence regions, territories and borders, edited by Anssi Paasi.ABSTRACTThe distorted shape many today’s political borders has been widely noted. An increasingly sprawling body literature geography beyond explored growing spatial ambiguity which are now seen both externalized networked throughout society. There some recognition that reconfiguration to appear locations challenge conventional assumptions about relationship between state, border territory may involve a temporal dimension; however, ways time space work through each other what it means move out community have remained largely overlooked. In order make sense complex entanglements involved contemporary bordering processes, I advance an understanding devices selectively contract expand distance internal external mobilize immobilize migrants altering speed rhythm their movements. A focus dynamic, fragmented ephemeral timespaces, my view, offers more nuanced account how cross-border movements currently regulated.
